Mastering the Art of Consistency and Setting Realistic Goals
Before you start thinking about what goals you’d like to achieve for the year, we first need to define what consistency is. Consistency is showing up every day, taking steps- no matter how big or small, its being committed to your end goal, even when you have a few set backs.
Here are some tips to help you stay consistent and set realistic goals.
Step 1:
Set clear goals. Vague dreams lead to wishy washy actions. For example, instead of saying ‘I want to get in shape”, be specific! How exactly are you going to do that? Break it down. Maybe its setting up an achievable exercise routine, maybe its waking up 1hr earlier to make sure you have a healthy breakfast, maybe its meal prepping for the week.
Write down your long-term goals and the underneath set smaller short term goals that you can achieve. If you are a visual person, studies gave shown a vision board has huge success. By regularly viewing your vision board, you reinforce your goals and intentions, which can help you stay focused, motivated and aligned with your personal vision.
Step 2:
Introduce daily habits to implement in your routine. This will help you inch closer and closer to your goal. It helps you stay focused on your goal daily and even when you have a little set back, if you get back to these daily habits, you will be able to refocus yourself.
Lets go back to our “I want to get in shape" goal. How can we create daily habits to help achieve this goal?
One might be creating a night-time routine, so you get better quality sleep. Or another might be aiming to have at least 30g protein with every meal.
Whatever it is, write it down and write down behaviours that are harmful to your new routine. E.g. staying up late bingeing tv or filling up your schedule so you don’t have time to meal prep. When you write down behaviours that will either help you or not, its easy to identify when you start going down the road that pulls you off track.
Step 3:
But what if you go on holidays? or you have a rough week at work? And you let things slip a little? Does that mean you have to start again or even give up?
No not at all!
Always stick to the plan. Progress is not always a straight line, you are going to have ups and downs. It’s what you decide to do when you are on the down which will help you progress to your goal. Celebrate the wins, no matter how big or small!
Patience is a really important quality, because you don’t always see results straight away and there’s no need to throw the towel in when you’ve gone off track. Just reevaluate, maybe you need to make a smaller daily goal that is easier to achieve.
Hope we gave you some inspiration to help you achieve your goals this year!
